Recently I received an email asking how I achieved one of the effects I have used on my website, so rather than be evil and keep it to myself, or just reply to the one person I thought I’d make use of this blog I have and use it to publish the answer. The crux of the question was:
I was wondering if you would be willing to share your techniques for getting the LastFM list to display INSIDE the CD frame.
I actually use the effect a few times though the website, as well as the last.fm feed on my about page it is also used for the Flickr feed, email avatar previews and recently for the portfolio list items.

The 404 page is one of the most imaginatively designed web pages in a person’s website. A page totally unrestricted by elements such as navigation and headers that are common on most websites. My own 404 page was very bland; it looked exactly like the rest of the website and had only a few links back to the main website. It was ugly and barely helpful.
Redesigning my site provided the challenge to have a go at doing something more creative.

When I put my new website design live one of the first things I did, once I remembered, was to submit the site to some CSS Galleries, and it’s lucky I remembered as the result has been awesome.
Traffic
The most obvious result of being featured on CSS Galleries is an increase in traffic and as the image below shows the impact on a small site can be astounding.

When building a website there’s always that one page you just can’t be bothered with but you know has to be done. So instead of putting in the time and effort required you just throw any old shit together, more often than not this becomes the About page.
The reason for this is because there are few people that like talking about themselves and even fewer that can write about themselves. People are concerned about finding that balance between writing enough to sound interesting but not so much that you appear bigheaded or even worse a complete prick.
